The “Bucharest and Earthquakes” guided tour, marking the 1940 Vrancea earthquake (moment-magnitude 7.7)
3 hours tour
Starts from University Square, at 17:00 local time.
DATES:
9- 10 November 2023
6 October 2022
The 1940 earthquake constituted a first warning sign regarding the vulnerability of buildings in the capital city, causing the collapse of the Carlton high-rise building. The tour includes visiting the central part of Bucharest, which was the site of many complete or partial building collapses during the 1940 and 1977 Vrancea earthquakes. Participants also find out visually what went wrong back then but also what’s the current situation: why there are still so many vulnerable buildings and which are the risk reduction perspectives.
