From Mining Impacts to Sustainable Development: The EUMINDA Perspective

Leading experts:
Cristina Scumpu (Ministry of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism, EUMINDA Project/ROMECO)
Monica Dinu & Luminita Ghervase (National Institute of Research and Development for Optoelectronics – INOE 2000)
Ileana Radulescu (Horia Hulubei National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering – IFIN HH)
Florina Tuluca (Faculty of Geology and Geophysics & SS-IGAR)

  • The event offers an applied perspective on the transition from assessing the impacts of mining activities to identifying pathways for sustainable development within the context of EUMINDA. Discussions will address environmental issues in active and post-mining areas, as well as tailings storage facilities and the properties of the deposited materials. Based on selected samples and datasets, participants will explore how information obtained through XRF analyses, radioactivity measurements, and environmental monitoring can contribute to risk assessment and inform monitoring, remediation, and the potential responsible valorisation of mining waste.
  • The activity is aimed at students and will combine accessible explanations with technical elements and guided data interpretation. Participants will gain an understanding of the links between geology, geophysics, environmental physics, monitoring technologies, and decision-making related to the regeneration of areas affected by mining. Dialogue with institutional representatives and invited experts will highlight the role of collaboration between education, research, and public administration in transforming scientific data into practical solutions for communities and the environment.

This event is organized as part of the 4th edition of Sustainability Week. Sustainability Week is an annual event of the University of Bucharest, bringing together initiatives and activities promoted throughout the academic community to encourage dialogue, engagement, and collaboration in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Organizers: EAGE Student Chapter and the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics – University of Bucharest; AR-GEO-EDU; Romanian Society of Applied Geophysics (SGAR)
