PSinSAR WORKSHOP

“PSInSAR – A Radar Interferometry Technique for Measuring Ground Dynamics and Infrastructure Health from Space” is a focused workshop designed to introduce participants to the principles and practical applications of Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PSInSAR).

The workshop will cover the theoretical framework behind PSInSAR, including satellite radar technologies, data acquisition, and processing methodologies used to detect ground deformation with millimetric precision.

A key component of the session is a hands-on case study using real satellite data from the Rătești area, where participants will explore ground movement patterns and assess potential impacts on infrastructure stability. The applied segment offers valuable insights into interpreting PSInSAR outputs in real-world geohazard contexts.

About the speaker:

Valentin PONCOS – Head of Radar Technology Group, TERRASIGNA

Valentin Poncos is a geophysicist and a signal processing engineer, with studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Faculty of Geology and Geophysics in Bucharest, Faculty of Geoscience in Calgary and the Faculties of Electrical Engineering at Ottawa University and Carleton University. During his career, Valentin developed the first car GPS system in Canada, worked in signal processing for the seismic exploration industry and was a developer of an infrared detect and track system as an electronic countermeasure for the Dutch, German and Canadian militaries. With the advent of the ESA ERS synthetic aperture radar, Valentin transferred his signal processing experience to SAR image focusing and interferometry. During his projects with the Canadian Space Agency, Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, European Space Agency and also with the private industry, Valentin evolved SAR interferometry from research to an operational stage that culminates with the advent of ESA’s Sentinel-1 and NASA NiSAR missions with full coverage of the Earth surface and free and open data access. Presently, Valentin’s work consists in integrating the interferometric techniques into the mainstream geodetical services by extracting valuable information about critical ground displacement areas and using interferometric measurements and various ancillary information (climate change, weather events) ingested in predictive AI systems to elaborate risk maps.
