BSC of AAPG Geological and Geophysical field application to the Southern Carpathians 2023

BSC of AAPG Geological and Geophysical field application

to the Southern Carpathians

Date: 20-22  October 2023

Main organizer: University of Bucharest AAPG Student Chapter (BSC of AAPG)

Co-organizers: Faculty of Geology and Geophysics, Romanian Society of Applied Geophysics

Attendance: 30 students

Intinerary: Bucharest – Buila-Vânturarița Massif -Ocnele Mari (Vâlcea County)-Bucharest.

During the activities planned for this field application, students were able to use geological and geophysical equipment and to describe a variety of rock formations, ranging from the metamorphic basement to sedimentary layers, analyze geological maps, and investigate faults and folds within the area. These hands-on experiences enabled them to explore various aspects of geology, including geophysics, geological engineering, and hydrogeology. They learned about quarries, salt mines, water wells, and studied slope instability in the field.

Moreover, students explored areas impacted by subsidence triggered by the salt mining technique, specifically the Ocnele Mari Well Fields, situated within the central zone of the Badenian age salt deposit. Students gained insights into engineering and environmental challenges associated with mining-induced subsidence. Geophysical studies, such as gravimetric investigations, conducted on salt deposits aim to comprehend its geological structure. These studies involve monitoring gravity anomalies, which enables the prediction of potential high-risk areas during mining operations.
